Eating Rotten Shark

You might recall the story of Hákarl, Iceland’s rotten shark treat, from January’s MSG. Here’s a firsthand account, from fellow Brainery teacher (and cheese expert!) Andrew Torrens. You can read a bit more about the dish here.

Myself and 3 friends ate the shark this past Friday and while it was certainly not enjoyable no one vomited. In actuality I was slightly disappointed and thought it was tamer then it had been beefed up by the internet. Yes I felt nauseous from the smell and my friends apartment may never be inhabitable again the taste was simply fish, fish, fish, soap and ammonia. Even my girlfriend who has been trying to fight a fear of seafood since she was young ate the shark on friday night (she also had salmon for the first time on thursday night and said that horrified her more). In conclusion it wasn’t that bad and not even close to as bad as stinky tofu which my friend has also had.
